I'm getting the itch to do some modeling again, but it will require me to build a Linux platform. What would be a good choice of processor speed and memory? I'm thinking at least a gig of RAM and a 2 GHz processor, or I could go dual-head with a pair of slower chips. It's been a while since I ran ARPS and that was on an SGI, so I'm a bit behind on its capabilities in a PC setting. Is there any preference for Pentium or AMD? I'd like to start with a high-res (500m) supercell experiment, and then try some regional forecasting for New England. Idealized sims aren't too bad, but the real-time stuff can use up a lot of juice.
